The game was originally started in West Somerset by Tom Lomas from the Notley Arms in Monksilver in 2001. He persuaded 3 of his friends to join him and play on the lawn, these being Mike Browning, Fred Sheppard and David Henderson. They called themselves the Silver Monks and were quickly joined by the Carew Arms in Crowcombe.

In 2002 the Masons Arms in Williton joined, and 2 weeks later The Windmill Inn in West Quantoxhead came along. From these 4 teams the West Somerset Boules Association was formed as a social gathering and an excuse to visit different pubs in the area. From these 4 teams popularity grew in West Somerset and now we currently have 34 teams and 4 divisions travelling between 16 local venues.

Our team fixtures run throughout the summer season and matches are played every Wednesday evening. We also run a team Knock Out Competition to which runs alongside the league matches and a newly formed Knock Out Pairs Competition for our 2025 season. Once fixtures come to an end all teams are then welcome to join in on the Round Robin Tournament, one held for each division and to finalise the season a Champion of Champions Tournament is held for the Champions of all prior competitions to battle it out between each other!

We’re so fortunate to have really friendly, easygoing teams and super landlords and landladies to host us all to which we’re very grateful for.
